Residential Overview

At UWC Changshu China,580 students from over 100 countries and regions live in 11 houses.  Each house is comprised of 52 students or so from three year groups. The residential life is exciting and dynamic, and is an integral part of UWC education.  UWC Changshu China  aims to provide a safe, challenging and rewarding learning environment for all students who are taken care of by Heads of House, Advisors, and other staff.

It is not always easy for students from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds to live together, with most of them far away from home. However, it’s in this environment, students learn to embrace diversity, build cross cultural understanding, better manage time, deal with stress, care about others and grow a sense of responsibility for the community. The strong bonding between the students and staff members make the residential life an enjoyable experience.  They  engage in a wide range of social and cultural activities. They also develop lasting memories and lifelong friendships.

The Health and Wellness Programme at UWC Changshu China provides an opportunity for students to make a better stay through educational and cultural activities, peer counselling and community living. Health and Wellness programme is a combination of personal problem-solving, diet and nutrition, stress management, education about potentially disastrous habits such as smoking, alcohol, and drugs and understanding and maintaining healthy relationships.

Medical Care

With 5 full-time registered nurses in our College clinic, we provide 24X7 routine medical services for students, faculty and staff, including daily medical care, health and epidemic prevention, infectious diseases control and prevention, and medical insurance affairs. We also provide ordinary OTC medicines and first-aid supplies. If a student is in severe condition and needs further medical treatments, the nurse on duty will arrange and accompany the student for hospital visit, and report to Head of House afterwards, and the Head of House will contact the parent of the student immediately to inform about  the student medical condition.

The College has basic medical insurance for every student. If the student already has an international medical insurance, please ensure that the insurance provider is aware that the student will be studying in China for a few years.

Student counseling

Three full time on campus counsellors are available to students. Students are free to contact them at any point of time. They will be available for a range of needs from time management, stress, cross-cultural understanding, and helping students to manage their relationships, guiding students when they are in a state of despondency, extreme apprehension and family problems. The counsellors are experienced in working with multicultural adolescents and a variety of mental health issues. The college ensure to provide support and medication through a psychiatrist if necessary.

The college has an informal group (Peer Mentor Program) of trained second year students who works under the guidance of counsellors. This platform provides an opportunity for students with another approachable body of people to speak to, other than the counsellors, crew leaders and friends. Peer Support Group members live in each block and come from a diverse background. Members of PSG can be trusted to maintain certain level of confidentiality, anything requiring immediate attention will be communicated to the counsellors.
