Graduates' Reflections:

“Guided by Kurt Hahn’s quote 'be the change you want to see in the world', we are invigorated to take all kinds of initiatives to build and serve our community, especially as founding year students. This unique experience has given me not only innumerable learning opportunities, but more importantly a passion to build, and serve.”

UWC is a place with diversity in all forms: in nationality, opinion and interests, but more importantly, UWC is a place to get to know yourself. By immersing ourselves in the challenging but extremely fun life of a UWC student, I have become more invested in the core values of UWC without even noticing it. In many ways, UWC students take action when problems arise on campus or in the whole world, despite fatigue and exam stress. I have yet to see another group of people this passionate about a better world!

I never thought that two years could have such a huge impact on me. As a young adult, UWC has shaped me and made me the person that I am now. From spending a week in a Miao village in Guizhou to organizing a fashion show in Shanghai, all the experiences I have had in UWC taught me useful skills and left me with amazing memories. I am grateful to all the people who gave me the chance to be here, to the school that provided me with a scolarship and to my classmates who made these two years unforgettable.

I used to study in the Chinese educational system. Since I became a student at UWC, I have been greatly influenced by the diversity of culture at UWC. I have become more concerned with global issues and more passionate for community services. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience UWC education which has given me confidence and enabled me to become a better person. I hope that through Mini-UWC, I can promote the core values of UWC education to more students sharing my dream and coming from ordinary background.

After trying many times, I still couldn't conclude my UWC experience in a couple of sentences. Being in this journey, I don’t always realize that the stories my classmates carry are from the other side of the world. It feels like we are just a big family: we have different opinions but we are definitely united; we are all unique but also very alike. But now that I am almost at the end of this journey, I started to realize that crisis, celebrations, and every single events that are happening around the world, that we see on the TV or in newspapers, are not far away from me anymore. All the things that I was ignorant about are now so close to me that I even feel a responsibility to do something. This responsibility is the greatest takeaway from UWC.

My two years at UWC has gone by all too fast, and it is impossible to pick out one event that is most impressive. No matter it is rowing the dragon boat and chanting with drum beats on the Kuncheng Lake; making dumplings and setting off fireworks on Chinese New Year's Eve in Beijing with the 14 friends that I hosted; or sitting on the grass circle on a lazy afternoon discussing how newspapers are different from everybody's country, these experiences enabled me to acknowledge, accept, and appreciate the beauty that lies under our differences.

UWC has been and will probably be the best two years of my life. In this place, I've found the best and worst parts of myself, experienced things and done things I could never have imagined back home and met the most amazing people:teachers and students alike. It taught me success wasn't a score on a test paper or how much money you had and that doing "good" for the world doesn't have to be on a grand scale but in the every day actions we do.

After I came to UWC Changshu, not only did I learn more about other cultures, but more importantly, I made friends with people from all over the world. I really cherish the two years I spent here whenever I think of the fact that I will have friends with me when I go to many countries. The experience itself is unforgettable, but our connection is even more memorable.

For the past two years I have had the greatest experience of my life. Looking back on what UWC has made of myself, I see how much I've grown as a person. Many mistakes were made, more than I can count, but learning from those mistakes brought our community together. In this community, there is always someone helping you to stand up when you fall. People I have met here impacted my life tremendously and they are the biggest gift this UWC Changshu experience has given me.

UWC teaches me to be inclusive, to understand and appreciate the differerences. I no longer judge others because now I know that each one is an unique individual, a global citizen. We know him or her only if we could understand his or her heart.
