How can there be peace without people understanding each other, and how can this be if they don’t know each other?

I regard it as the foremost task of education to ensure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial and above all, compassion.

Schools having very poor conditions is very normal to me. You hear it every day; a school with students learning under trees, 100 kids in one classroom with no desks or chairs, college kids striking because they have no water or electricity. It has become so normal and a part of our lives that sometimes I think we forget it’s actually a problem that needs to be fixed. I went to Longhui. I remembered.

Ergo, I couldn’t grasp why successfully running a school of 5000 kids was such a big deal. I slowly understood what I had just discovered over the course of 4 days. On my last day, I had the privilege of speaking with the Dean of studies.

The thing that captivated me the most during the week were the physical exercises. The Dean explained that each class has a different set time for practice. Teaching more than 5000 kids a choreography, simple or not, shocked me. The was a lot of organization put into the lessons, and students showed possession of discipline they needed in order to learn. The Dean spoke with such passion when he said physical exercise is important because the kids may be the only child in their homes and have to stay healthy. I know nothing of encouraging every child both in class and in sports. That attitude of caring about more than finding perfect school sports teams is a game changer.

I got to see it is possible to successfully run such a big school through an unusual lens. I got to remember my dream of providing better channels of education back home. With all the inspirational people I keep meeting on this UWC journey, there is no doubt in my mind that this dream remembered will be fulfilled.
