With the arrival of April, the campus of UWC Changshu China becomes adorned with delicate cherry blossoms. It is a time when students enjoy the beauty of spring while immersing themselves in the enchanting world of books. We all carry within us the imprints of books that have touched our souls during our formative years, subtly shaping our world perspectives and cultural identities.

On the occasion of World Reading Day, six students from different countries and diverse backgrounds and cultures, recommended books that have left an indelible mark on their hearts.  These books bring us joy and laughter, sorrow and despair. Their unique perspectives shed light on the intricacies of the human condition, opening our minds and broadening our understanding of the world from an early age.

These books also inspire us to understand and think about the world in multiple dimensions, empathize with the fate of different countries, nations and individuals, and embrace the diversity of cultures.

Zichao Liu is a contemporary young travel literature writer who leads us to the lands swept by monsoons, capturing the essence of these regions undergoing tremendous changes, amidst the interplay of history and reality. He witnesses the enduring sense of dignity that modernization fails to erode, as well as the globalization of money and love.

He observes the loss of civilization and the birth of suffering, while also realizing the beliefs that sustain human existence. Meeting diverse individuals and encountering different ways of life, he employs insightful and composed prose to depict a world like this and people living in such a world. Balancing immersion and detachment, he maintains the perspective of an observer, offering readers travel literature that is both calmly objective and imbued with the unique style of a writer.

Dallergut Dream Department Store is a book series consisting of two chapters. The first series is about a department store that sells dreams to people who are asleep. Each floor of the department store sells different kinds of dreams, such as nostalgic memories or horror stories. In return for the dreams, people share their feelings after the dream, which becomes the ingredient for another dream. In dreams, people can do whatever they want or meet whoever they want (such as their family members who passed away).

The second series is about trying to get their loyal customers back. The main character, Penny, is now in the customer complaint service team. She works to help the customers to solve their complaints and comfort them to make them feel better. Overall, this book series is a heartwarming fictional story. One interesting part of this book is that there is no villain and that everyone has their own story. I recommend this book to people who want to read without worries and need a little cheer up.

This book is an emotive page-turner that delves into the family struggles of a young boy whose mother is diagnosed with cancer. It plays at your heartstrings and teaches the hardships of healing but the importance of it. Not just healing others but more importantly self.

In light of the growing political instability and worsening condition of the war in Sudan, I wholeheartedly recommend the book ‘They Poured Fire On Us From The Sky’. As someone from Sudan, I believe it vividly captures the resilience, courage, and spirit of the Sudanese people and provides valuable insight into the atrocities and challenges faced during this tumultuous period.

This book tells the real-life stories of the three authors who were forced to flee their homes as kids. They faced unimaginable hardships like hunger, violence, and being torn apart from their families. Reading their personal accounts really puts you in their shoes and gives you a deep appreciation for their resilience.

The book not only sheds light on the Sudanese conflict but also highlights the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It's a powerful and moving book that will leave you with a greater understanding of the struggles faced by refugees and the importance of empathy.

The Young Warriors is a book written by the Jamaican writer Victor Stafford Reid. This book is about five young 14-year-old boys from a Maroon village who are now training to become warriors and defend their village and after spotting British Redcoats, they embark on a journey to help protect their village and home. I think this book resonated with me when I first read it back in 7th grade because it was one of the first books I think I remember reading where it was from a writer from my country and the Caribbean region.

It was talking about a part of the history of my country that I feel wasn’t spoken about or represented to me at the time and it put it in such a captivating and new way. It is a fictional story but represents so many real things such as bravery, honor and freedom especially for young people to fight for what they believe in and things that may seem bigger than themselves.

The storybook I chose is one I read as a child, it is called "ام جديد" New Mom by Ismael Idris who is a Lebanese children's book author. This book talks about a young boy who gets into a squabble with his mother which led him to believe that he could find a better mom in the streets of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, if he were to go around and explore. With his driver or chauffeur, as we call them, he went around the different areas of Beirut and met women from different backgrounds and personalities. He realizes that no matter how much these women try to convince him, they will never surpass his mother in importance.

This resembles Lebanese culture because we as children are raised with a strong sense of value towards family, especially our mothers because there is a sense of appreciation towards everything they did to raise us. Reading it as a child simply made me giggle and laugh at the compilation of the various types of people you find in my small country. Now, I look back and laugh because I value my mother now because of how far away I am from her, but I was that boy at one point not realizing the true value of family.
