Max Pfingsten

Since joining UWC CSC in 2016, Harrison Max Pfingsten has served in an increasing number of roles at the school; from philosophy teacher to Learner Engagement Coordinator to Secretary General of the College Council, before becoming Head of Theory of Knowledge in 2021. He is an IB Examiner for both Philosophy and ToK.  He holds a B.A. in Classics from Depauw University, an M.A. in Classics from University of Colorado, and an M.Ed. from Jones International University.

Before coming to UWC CSC, Max worked for a variety of innovative educational enterprises. He was Student Inquiry Project Manager at his alma mater, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.  He was a founding instructor and curriculum designer at Study.com, where he designed, wrote, and directed an online course on Western Civilization, creating about 130 animated educational videos that have been viewed by millions of students in countries around the world, and eventually rising to Dean of Humanities. He also designed and delivered the Ancient World course for Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth.

From these experiences, Max has developed a passion for innovation in education, with a particular focus on nurturing intrinsic motivation through experiential learning, multimedia teaching, and educational games and simulations.
