Shirla Sum is Vice Principal (Education) with oversight of education programming. Shirla joined UWC Changshu China in 2017 as Head of Department for Individuals & Societies and Economics Teacher. During her 3 years at UWC Changshu China, Shirla led curriculum development and evaluation in the Foundation Program as Deputy Dean of Studies (Foundation Program). As Dean of Curriculum, she led efforts in advancing a research-based approach to curriculum design, integration of education technology and the development of an in-house professional learning program for faculty members.
Shirla was also a core member of the Yushan Academy Center for Design and Innovation (YSACDI) founding team, driving its conception to creation in September 2018. Under Shirla’s leadership as Director of YSACDI, the center has played an active role in promoting design education in the local community.
Shirla is an IB examiner and taught Economics, Business Management, and Individuals & Societies in international schools in Hong Kong and the mainland of China. Prior to her career in education, Shirla spent five years as an economist at Goldman Sachs in New York and Hong Kong conducting macroeconomics research, covering the US and Asia-Pacific economies.
Shirla is a graduate of Pearson College UWC in Canada, and has a double major in Economics and Philosophy from Wellesley College in the United States of America. She completed her Post Graduate Degree in Education (Economics) and Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies at the University of Hong Kong and is an ISTE Certified Educator.
